New window opens vs a tab

With the last MAC update-I do not like how when I click on an attachment within a file I am working on it opens a new window vs a tab. This is super inconvenient with my job. Is there a way to reverse this. Im not super tech savvy so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Opening an app/program on iMac prompts me to like open a file first? I just got a new iMac M1 running 12.5.1 Monterey. But I cant figure out what setting is causing this. Every application I open (be it Pages, Numbers, Quicktime...anything) opens up with like a prompt page like it wants me to open or find an existing file first...rather than just taking me to the normal start-up page of the app. How do I fix this? This is an example from Pages. I open the app and this pops up first. I can then hit that New Document button or cancel and it takes me to the normal app page. How can I stop this? What do I have selected that is doing this? This happens with every single app I open.

How to remove third column in Finder Windows on macOS 13.5.1? A couple of days ago the appearance of my Finder windows changed. For decades the Finder windows have consisted of only two columns: the sidebar on the left and the larger window showing the documents in the folder at which I am looking. But recently a third column has appeared to the right of the main column. This third column show a thumbnail of whatever document I have highlighted in the main column of the Finder window. I do not know what to call this third column. I call it a right-side side bar simply because that is what it looks like to me. I can close this third column by dragging its left border over to the right side of the Finder window. That gets tedious. I expect that this "right-side side bar" appeared when I made some errant keystroke while doing something else. I have no idea what this incorrect keystroke might be. Does anyone recognize what I am trying to describe here? Is there some way to remove this third column from my Finder windows? I am in MacOS 13.5.1. [Re-Titled by Moderator]

Set how all folders open

On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Go to Windows on the right, click the pop-up menu next to “Prefer tabs when opening documents,” then choose an option:

- Never: Open folders in a new window, not a tab.
- Always: Open folders in a new tab.
- In Full Screen: Open folders in a tab only when you’re working in full screen.
