MX Master 3S side buttons do not register at all only in games

I've tried this on at least five different Apple Silicon devices, macOS 11-14, on a handful of games since the launch of Apple Silicon with the exact same results. Just now I tried with FFXIV, Borderlands 2 and Hades.

Symptoms:

  • Side buttons work fine in browsers, navigating OS and all the desktop apps I use regularly (VSCode, Logic Pro, Studio One.).
  • Games simply do not register them being pressed.

What I've tried:

  • Creating an application specific mouse profile in Logi+ for each game.
  • Mapping the side buttons to shortcuts and buttons on the keyboard like period and comma.
  • Mapping the side buttons to "Middle Mouse Button".
  • Linearmouse.app... doesn't register the side buttons either.
  • Some other mouse app whose name escapes me... same thing, doesn't register side buttons.
  • Bluetooth and the Bolt dongle.

Not sure if the issue is with macOS or Logitech. Works as expected on Windows.

Logitech's support's response to the issue when I've submitted support ticket: You need a gaming mouse to play games... No joke. Lmao... so they aren't helpful to say the least.

Would love to game on Mac especially since Apple is trying to make more of an effort to include that use case, but kind of hard when something as fundemental as side buttons don't work.

Mac Studio, macOS 14.2

Ok, I think I found a fix that seems to work for me and will make a post for others who might stumble across it.

  1. Uninstall Logi Options+... it is garbage and what is causing the problem.
  2. Restart.
  3. Install Linearmouse.app. (With Logi Options+ uninstalled, the side buttons Back/Forward quit working in such things like browsers).
  4. In Linearmouse.app: Buttons > Toggle Enable universal back and forward to on.

Now you have a mouse where the side buttons work throughout the OS.

Granted the Gestures/Easy Switch button will no longer work if that is something you use. Would be nice if Logitech just fixed Options+, but that is unlikely since they either want to blame the user or try to convince them they need to buy one of their gaming mouses.
