My Mac has run out of application memory

Even when I don’t have anything open I get the message that I’ve run out of application memory. I’ve googled but I’m a bit of a techno dunce. Help!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.14

This can be caused by a variety of issues. Sometimes it helps to simply start the computer. How much RAM is installed? You can see that information in the About This Mac link under the Apple logo. It can also help to do a restart in the Safe Mode. Hold down the shift key on restart. Be patient as this can take several minutes while the Mac is repairing its operating system and clearing its caches. Try that and see what happens.
