DisplayLink is a workaround technology from Synaptics that allows adding extra monitors to a Mac or PC - beyond what the hardware supports.
It relies on third-party DisplayLink software running on your computer, to create “virtual displays” and send updates to them to an external hub or adapter equipped with a “magic decoder ring” DisplayLink chip set.
It doesn’t - and can’t - give you additional first-class, hardware-supported display outputs. There will be some compromises and drawbacks compared to relying solely on the computer’s native display support.
I have the 3rd monitor working with Display Link :)
Thanks for the update.
Does the third show up as an extended display or as mirrored with one of the other displays...?
Lags; artifacts; performance not well-suited to applications involving fast-changing screen content - like video editing or gaming.
Inability to play DRMed video from streaming video services on the additional displays - or perhaps on any displays at all, as long as extra ones were attached.
The possibility they future macOS updates would break your setup, and you would then be dependent on a third party to fix it.
Thank you. What if I used a DisplayLink for the 3rd monitor?

That's good to know, thanks.
what is Display Link?
I too want 3 monitors with just a mini
Note that DisplayLink is not the same thing as the video interface standard called DisplayPort. The two just have similar names.
"There will be some compromises and drawbacks compared to relying solely on the computer’s native display support"
What might those compromises be?
