I want Word as my default (Sonoma). When I follow the directions and click on "open with", the app is not there. It is installed and working. I have to copy from Pages and paste into Word. Obviously, this won't do.

If you are attempting to set use Open With in Finder to set Word to open Pages documents, you cannot do that because Word isn't capable of opening Pages documents.
One method is to open the document in Pages and then use the Pages File menu export to export the document to a Word format.
