ipod opens window explorer not itunes

My iPod Classic has suddenly started opening up in Windows Explorer but is not opening iTunes or even being recognised when I pen it up manually. I have spoken to Support for the last three days and despite their best endeavours and me following the standard instructions iTunes can't connect with the device.

However I added iTunes to my wife's laptop and it recognises my iPod. So the problem seems to lie with my laptop.

I've removed all the Norton software because I read somewhere that it can prevent the iTunes recognising the iPod but it had made no difference. I did update some of my drivers via Norton recently so I have been wondering whether that could be the reason?

All I can think of now is to restore my laptop to factory settings and start again.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delay in responding. I have already tried this but without much luck. I'm not very technical which doesnt help.

I have tried something else; I copied the entire library from my laptop to my fathers old Dell desktop; once I connected the iPod it opened the windows folders but it did connect to iTunes and synchronised the files so that the last album i ripped is now on my iPod.

However I ripped another CD and when I connected the iPod it failed to recognised the device - back to square one.

I'm not sure what to do next; everything I have tried fails and I don't feel confident that I know what I'm doing. As Apple support have been disappointnig so far I think I will need to find someone local that has the expertise to work through this properly and hopefully fix it.
