Unclear when you say you are having the same problem. The problem reported was that the Face ID & Passcode option is no longer available in Settings with the solution already provided to remove the restriction.

If you tried resetting your Face ID, then you must have that option is settings, which is different from the problem the OP had. If you do not have Face ID & Passcode in your Settings, have you removed the restriction.

Sadly the update reverted my passcode to 4 digits and since I’ve used a 6 digit code for years I have no idea what to do.

I turned off Screen Time. But where do I find "Face ID & Passcode" among the many items within Settings. For example, which group (the items separated by grey bars) is it in?

Sounds like Screen Time restrictions are turned on. You can shut them off at Settings > Screen Time > Turn off Screen Time.

You can also specifically check each individual setting at Settings > Screen Time > Contents & Privacy Restrictions. The Passcode Changes restriction is what will remove the Face ID & Passcode setting and the Account Changes restriction will prevent you from choosing your Apple ID.
