Acura Apple Carplay Issues with Heads Up Display (HUD) and Google Maps on 2023/2024 MDX & Integra models (same for BMW)

I spent an hour on the phone with the Acura tech people after my local dealer was trying to upsell me to an Integra Type S confirming what I was observing. Namely,:

Heads Up Display ("HUD") while using Apple Carplay WILL NOT work with Google Maps

(but Google Maps will work on the touch screen monitor while using Apple CarPlay);

conversely, HUD with Google Android Auto WILL NOT work with Apple Maps (but Apple Maps

will work on the touch screen monitor while using Android Auto). It seems that BMW models have the identical shortcoming.

Since I have a Samsung S23 and my wife, an iPhone 15 Pro Max (but both greatly prefer Google Maps and/or Waze ), we have had front row seats to this major system flaw.

Unlike, with the Acura MDX line (and many BMW lines), there is no option for the Acura Integra & Acura Type S models to upgrade to the proprietary Acura GPS navigation system (similar to BMW's). I asked the Acura tech support if I could buy an MDX GPS Navigation model and install it on either the Integra or the Type S and the answer was no

It is inconceivable, that to use any brand's (whether BMW, Acura, et. al.) HUD navigation features, you can be forced to change your phone and, in the case of the Integra/Type S lines, not have the option of upgrading to the Acura inhouse navigation system to bypass both Apple Carplay and Android Auto defects.

I told the Acura people that this was a deal killer for me until they resolved this problem.

BUT, most importantly, for the purposes of this discussion thread, I did not get an answer from Acura as to whether the culprit was Apple & Android for not making HUD provisions for the competing map apps OR Acura not paying/demanding that Apple/Android deploy HUD capability for competing service.

If anyone knows, please let me know so I can raise **** with the right groups. Thanks.

If it were only Acura/Honda and not BMW and other carmakers, I give more credence to this being an issue of Acura/Honda.

While I am suspicious of both tech groups (phone & auto), Apple does have a long standing history (much like Microsoft) of being rigid & being sluggish in integrating other competing products. It too Apple ages to get Google Maps on iPhone even though the Google/Waze products have been way better over the years.

Actually, one of the Acura techs said that all Apple and Google had to do to make this work is internal programing on their Apps. I will continue to search for an explanation to figure out who to bug.

It sounds like you've encountered a limitation with the integration of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Heads-Up Display (HUD) on the 2023/2024 Acura MDX and Integra models, as well as a similar issue with BMW models. Unfortunately, these kinds of limitations are often the result of a combination of factors involving both the automaker and the tech companies providing the smartphone integration platforms.

There could be regulatory or safety considerations that affect the implementation of certain features, especially when it comes to heads-up displays. Meeting safety standards and regulations may limit the integration of certain functionalities.

Thank you for your response.

Google Maps, Apple Maps, Carplay and Android Auto have all been approved and are used by the various manufacturers and tech companies. In fact, the respective Map Apps and Carplay & Android Auto are already working interchangeably on cars' monitors - so the bulk of the integration and safety standard issues has already been taken care of.

It should require only minor additional programing to get the interchangeability extended to HUD.

I will drop my note to Apple as I have to the car manufacturers and Google about this. What is still not addressed is who is blocking the impetus to extend the current level of integration to HUD.

But again, thank you for your reply.
