how to use Time MAchine with a tp-link axe 75 usb connected hard drive

I use a WD My Book 6Tb USB3 HD plugged into the router. Followed all the instructions but even though the HD shows when I use "connect to server" I can't connect to it using Time Machine. Also I can't delete it and choose another HD. Running Sonoma on 2018 Intel Mac mini

Nice to hear I'm not alone. I originally bought an Asus router and ran into this problem so returned it and now the Tp-Link replacement is doing the same.

Neither companies are exactly Mac compliant and seem to somehow change passwords at a whim. Their tech support on anything Mac is abysmal but who isn't? Apple seems to have discarded any support for an Apple router so where do we go from here?

Just upgraded to Sonoma 14.3 so keeping fingers crossed.

No notification from Apple there was an upgrade, why not?

Actually, I managed to fix it just now! My main issue was that Time Machine was not detecting the network drive after upgrading to Sonoma. A few minutes of intense troubleshooting and I have it up and running again. Let me describe what I did:

Just to make sure that the router is ready to share the backup drive with MacOS.

  • Set up File Sharing in MacOS Sonoma:

Backup disks for Time Machine - Apple Support

I followed the steps in "Mac shared as a Time Machine backup destination" section. Apparently, File Sharing needs to specificy that a network drive is going to be used in TM, otherwise it is not recognized.

  • In Time Machine, you should now see the network drive on the list.

Let me know if this helps! Good luck!

Well sort of. The solution is in the sharing part if you can get the hd to show as a disk image on your desktop.

I managed to get an image of the hard drive mounted on the Desktop and select it as my Time Machine back up. But it was only 250Mb so something else needs to be corrected in TP-Link set up. But hey at least it proves it's possible so I'll keep plugging away.

Big hurdle is I want to use my 6TB external disk as backup for 3 different Macs so I guess I'll need to format and partition the drive so each Mac backs up to it's own partition.

My brain hurts just thinking about it.

Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how I make out.
