Unable to connect my MacBook Air M1 to my hotspot on my iPhone 12 Pro

Hey,

My macbook air m1 is my only apple device that could not connect to my Iphone hotspot (tmobile with max hotspot plan).

I've always had it work flawlessly until the software update. Ironically, my Ipad pro (m1) 11 inch still connects to the hotspot flawlessly.

My macbook air succesfully connects, but no internet connection. I've been trying all the weird solutions to reset network settings/having ipv6 automatic settings via network details/etc.

Is this a known bug or is there a real solution for my macbook or do I just have to pray for an update?

I just got off with apple support. There is a workaround to this issue.

In your iPhone settings, go to General --> About and change the name of your phone. Then turn on your hotspot and try connecting

Thanks for the reply :) Yes, I've tried forgetting the hotspot network, renaming the iphone and changing the password a few times. My ipad works flawlessly with the mobile hotspot everytime, but my macbook air specifically refuses to establish an internet connection.

My only guess is either it has something to do with expressvpn (i made sure to deactivate it and quit the app a few times to see if it'd work, but nothing has at the moment) or ios 17/sonoma update isn't playing nice with something on my laptop.

As an update here, I've been given a different laptop at my work, crucially still running 14.1

The same up to date iPhone that cannot connect to my M1 14.3 hotspot, connects to my M3 14.1 hotspot no problem. This HAS to therefore be a 14.3 bug – the issue is not with iOS 17.2.1

No way am I updating the software on the new Mac to 14.3!

Did you try updating to ios 17.3 on your iphone? You are not on the latest IOS.

Technically you are not using an "up to date" iphone. Is it an Iphone SE2 or iphone15?

Information about the iphone you are using and what Mac laptops are being used may be helpful.

The hardware radios in the phones get updated to different wifi protocols.

One can guess the M3 Mac is a Macbook pro 14 or 16. What was the M1 Mac??

When I said the iOS was the "same up to date" I meant it's the same iPhone on the same iOS I was using when I first reported the issue, using hotspot on the M1 MBP. I was trying to illustrate that the same iOS does work with the M3 and so there's no change in variables on the iPhone side. This implies to me that the cause is not down to the phone since it can establish a hotspot with other Macs in the house on an older OS, be it an intel on Big Sur or the M3 on 14.1. The only variable that is unsuccessful is Sonoma 14.3

The iPhone is a 12

The M1 is a MBP 16", same for the M3.

I have tried all the workarounds in this thread, be them on the phone or the Mac and none have been successful whilst connecting with 14.3

I will update the iOS 17.3 but I think it's pretty clear where the blame lies?

I am having the exact same problem. On my Mac M1 I am running Sonoma 14.3 and my iPhone is running iOS 17.3. My Mac connects to my home wifi without any problems. When I bring it into work and connect to the wireless there it connects and runs for a bit then drops off.

I tried connecting to a Verizon Mi-Fi and it would connect for a bit, then drop off.

On my iPhone hotspot it would do the same thing.

I tried everything above including resetting the OS and same problem.

So frustrating.

Same issue except im on bigsur. None of the solutions work. It will connect finally after the ipv6 thing but no internet.

the thing is im on same ios version. So i suspect that is the issue here and not the laptop. Is there any way to revert the version update? I cant work without a hotspot and neither can anyone oncall at my org. We will have to switch to android for this?

Changing the ipv6 settings to automatic doesn’t do it for me, the only thing that works is tediously changing them all manually (as above) every time I want to hotspot, which is very tedious. Has anyone else come up with a permanent solution? This is all extremely frustrating that two relatively new apple products don’t play together reliably.
