Update IOS 17.3 didn’t fix the blurry/unfocused selfie camera 14 pro max

since downloading IOS 17.2.1 & 17.3 my iPhone selfie/front camera has been unable to focus, the photos are terrible 😭 please help me fix this I reallly thought a new update (17.3) would fix this issue I don’t know what else to do.

I have completed:-

  • turning the phone on and off several times
  • cleaned the screen/ camera lens area
  • a soft reset of the phone
  • a fiddle with the camera settings both when opening the camera and within the actual phone settings
  • Confirmed it works a little better when holding the phone quite far away but it’s still not 100% as it should be

I was having a similar issue and it seemed the camera was going into macro mode by itself. If I pressed the little yellow fire icon in the bottom left corner it immediately focused fine. It was annoying and needs to be fixed but that was the short term work around for me. Coincidently I updated to 17.3 last night and my camera does not seem to work at all now. it seems to freeze every time I attempt to snap a photo.

Have you actually contacted Apple about it? Not your provider but Apple support? While some have posted having issues with this I have not had it on my 15 Pro max or the other 15 and 14 series in the household so whatever the cause is it doesn’t appear to be something universally affecting everyone that has updated to the same iOS versions. If you haven’t had it physically inspected it’s difficult to assume it the issue is solely associated with the iOS updates. Also, if the latest update had intended to address the issue it likely would have been listed in the update info. Doesn’t mean it’s not something that iOS update won’t address…but nothing in this update seemed to imply any camera issues were being addressed.

I didn’t think to ask you how long you have had your phone (there are still a lot of 14 Pro Mac devices still under the 1 year warranty). Yes, if it is out of warranty you would likely have to pay for a repair (unless you have AppleCare+ or depending on how you paid for your device and/or monthly cellular bill you may have protection coverage from your credit card. You would need to check that. I know I have a couple of CC’s that provide extended warranty coverage if you purchased the phone using the card or pay your monthly service using that card. Seems to be a common offer with a lot of cards now) although if it’s truly determined that the issue is related to a software issue you may not have to worry about any fee….but until it’s actually visually looked at to be sure you just won’t know. Hopefully it’s just a bug that will addressed with a future update though. Frustrating to wait but would be better than any out of warranty fee.

Just after 17.2.1 update.

The depth effect in portrait mode stopped working. No timeframe given. I have an interaction with apple support via chat first where they deny any software issue. Then I had a conversation with the support team where after the complete diagnostics they told me that many users are facing the camera issue which is in fact a software issue and will be addressed soon.

iOS updates generally aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. Camera issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

This seems purely coincidental so please check the Setting on your device.

As mentioned above I have thoroughly checked the settings and if you search the community there are many other people that have been affected since downloading 17.2.1, even my phone provider advised me to just await a new update as this is a common occurrence.

in general people seem to be having camera issues with iPhone 14’s and 15’s.

On my 13 Pro Max the 17.2.1 update made my camera pop an error saying it wasn't a genuine apple part and the camera would go black at times or not work. The 17.3 update made the error message go away and it worked perfect for about 18 hours. It then only worked in certain camera modes and now it only works for video or pano pictures. I have to take pictures in snapchat. I'm out of factory warranty and I purchased the phone out right from Apple online. Apple chat said I needed to make an appt (they are 100 miles away from me) or send it in.. they never admitted to any fault or knowing of any complaints. How aggravating.

Unfortunately “soon” doesn’t necessarily mean the next update (ie the one that released yesterday)….the wireless charging in some vehicles wasn’t addressed on the next immediate iOS update (referring to the ones that started having issues after the fix for BMWs and I believe 1 Toyota model “broke” others including my own). Hopefully if that issue truly is software related it will be in the next update that could technically be soon….although while experiencing the issue makes time seem to go super slow.

I agree! I don’t understand why apple don’t take accountability, my phone is pristine it’s well looked after and now I have a £1000 phone that can’t take selfies/use the front camera, doesn’t work in any apps either it’s an absolute joke!! To be honest the longer it goes on the more furious I am, don’t even want an apple phone anymore. Waste of money.
