High Pitched Ringing In Wired Headphones

Yesterday morning I was listening to music using my wired headphones (lightning connecter) on an iPhone 13 Pro Max and then suddenly my music paused and this loud high pitched ringing started to be emitted from the headphones. I had taken them out and waited for the sound to go away. About a minute after they stopped ringing and I put them back in my ear. When I resumed my music it started playing from the phone speakers instead of the headphones and I had to disconnect and reconnect the headphones for them to work properly. After I thought things would be fine but it has happened multiple times since then and I don't know why they would be acting this way as they are new and have been treated with appropriate care. I wasn't able to find anyone with a similar experience and I'm curious as to what is causing it, long term solutions, and how to prevent this from happening in the future.
