It works with Face ID on iPhones that have Face ID, and Touch ID on phones that have Touch ID.

FIRST: You must update to iOS 17.3. Then:

From→About Stolen Device Protection for iPhone - Apple Support:

To turn on Stolen Device Protection you must use two-factor authentication for your Apple ID and set up or enable the following on your iPhone: a device passcodeFace ID or Touch IDFind My; and Significant Locations* (Location Services).

Do you meet all of the above requirements?

No, you CANNOT see significant locations, except for the 2 most recent. I have 100 significant locations, and I can only see HOME and the last place I spent more than 15 minutes; a significant location is one where you have been for more than a few minutes.

I will add that Apple takes personal security very seriously. If you don’t believe that then you should not have an iPhone or any other Apple product.

I’m facing the same issue on an iPhone 14. Two-factor auth is on, relevant location services as well as Find my… service. Turns out I would have to switch on FaceId (which I never did as it is a security risk). Apple wants me to weaken the safety of my iPhone before allowing me to strengthen it again with the stolen device protection… that feature was my only reason to update to iOS 17, and of course now I can’t go back any more…

I have a 2nd generation Apple iPhone SE. I have given up trying to use fingerprint ID. After a couple successful tries it no longer recognizes my finger. Usually within a day or two.

Would I be locking MYSELF out of my phone if I were to activate SDP and the fingerprint recognition fails to recognize me?

That depends. If you have Significant Locations enabled you can bypass SDP when you are in a Significant Location. But that’s taking a chance.

There are alternate ways to protect your phone that work similarly to SDP, without actually turning it on. See this user tip→Secure your iPhone against passcode hijac… - Apple Community. Stage 2 in that tip is the only one that would be useful to you.

Do others with SEs have issues with Touch ID stopping working?

I’ve tried setting it up multiple times and all I have to do is do some yard work and my fingers are no longer recognized.

i can’t take the chance that I’d get locked out of my own phone. I also change locations for blocks of time, and unless I can force the phone to recognize a location after months of being away from it, that could also complicate getting into my phone.
