Why does Apple ask me to temporarily remove apps for a software update when I have plenty of space?

IOS 17.3 is 634.9 MB, according to the info/installation screen. My 64 GB iPhone only is using 59.38 GB of space. That means I have 4.62 free GB. Why is my iPhone asking me to temporarily delete apps, then?

Yes. You do. It takes quite a bit of space to unpack and install the update.

Because you do not have “plenty of space”. You need more available space than you have to install the update.
