Updating a book on Books app with a new file from publisher

There is a book in my Books app on MacBook Pro 14-in, 2021 running Sonoma 14.2.1 that needed updating. The publisher has sent me a new .epub file to download. What's the best way to handle this? I'd rather not lose my annotations/highlights in my existing file of the book.

Updating an existing iBook using iBooks Author? I need to update an existing Apple iBook created in 2015 by adding an additional Chapter and a revised Introduction. Although Pages is required for new publications I understand I can still use iBooks to access and update as I hear there are potential formatting problems in migrating to Pages? (My iMac uses High Sierra and I'm considering updating to Catalina if this would help.) Any suggestions gratefully received.
