2017 IMac is slow / beachballing when performing simple tasks

My computer is a Refurbished 21.5-inch iMac 3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5 with Retina 4K display

Purchased in 2017.

It has always been under-performing: slow at performing simple tasks (Office suite, web browsing...), "buggy" (beachballing...)... It would routinely require force-quitting apps or restarting altogether. A handful of times, the screen also went black and nothing could unblock it.

Within the first 2 years, while still under warranty, we brought the computer to an Apple store and had it checked. No major issue was found. But a complete wipe was done and we restarted from scratch.

That did not achieve anything and problems continued. Did you just buy a "lemon" from the start?

As a result, I often use my phone or reach for my MBP 2009 model, which still performs much more reliably.

I am at the point where I want to fix the issue for good or replace the computer.

Thanks for your help.

For reference, EtreCheck report we did today is attached

Hey there!

Here are some things I noticed from the report.

Avast

Mac computers do not benefit from third-party security apps. Having them installed can lead to poor performance and issues with macOS. Avast should be uninstalled: Uninstalling Avast Security from Mac.

1TB 5400-rpm hard disk

Your USB 3-equipped Mac with a hard disk can have improved system performance by connecting to an external solid-state drive (also known as an SSD). An external SSD as a startup disk can give your Mac additional performance for system responsiveness, apps, startup, and more.

I operate my 21.5-inch iMac from 2015 using an external SSD as its startup disk and it has dramatically increased performance.

Hope this helps!

I agree the primary issue is the factory hard drive. Tha shows here:

I agree that the primary issue is your hard drive. Almost all 21.5-inch iMacs made from 2012 through 2019 suffer this issue unless up-ordered with Apple's optional Fusion(hybrid) drive of solid-state drive. Yours has neither.

The operative data showing this are in bold here.

Performance:

System Load: 1.75 (1 min ago) 1.97 (5 min ago) 2.25 (15 min ago)

Nominal I/O usage: 0.10 MB/s

File system: 32.46 seconds

Write speed: 65 MB/s

Read speed: 57 MB/s

Even under perfect conditions that drive model can run no faster than about 80MB/sec, which stll is dreadfully slow with newer macOS versions.

The cheapest incarnation of the USB3 external SSD that Jack-19 mentions will do a minimum of 400MB/sec all day long. That will feel like a new computer.

Your current drive is slightly below nominals, likely due to the interference of useless software. In addition to Avast, I see BitTorrent. Dump it. Few users need a client-side VPN; they will slow performance, and not all of the hevily advertised ones are secure. You have TWO!

The abnormal resource usage and hangs in Brave Browser could very likely be due to those interferences as well.

The external SSD solution does NOT require professional installation.
