Accessing music in iTunes'

My Asus laptop computer, that runs Windows 11, shows me all the folders in my iTunes library, but I cannot get any of them to play. The message is file location unknown. Clicking on find location does not help. Can anyone suggest a fix for this? Norman

As stated, the reason that iTunes can no longer find your music is because the file for each song is not where it used to be when you added the file to your iTunes Library. (Remember, the music is not inside your library. All iTunes does is list the music and remember where the file for each song is located on your computer.)

This also includes the path to that location. For example, if your music is on an external drive that is connected to your computer, then that drive must be running and ready to read before you start iTunes. It must also have the same drive letter that it had when you added music to the library.

Try looking for a file:

  • in iTunes, select any missing song and right-click it and select Song Info from the pop-up menu
  • you should see the file could not be found message and two boxes; Locate and No. Select the No option, which will open up the file information display (on the Details tab)
  • switch to the File tab
  • (on the File tab) look for location. What does the location field say?

If it says any other drive than the C drive, where is that drive? Is it part of your laptop or is it an external drive?

If I have understood you correctly, all your music is listed in your iTunes Library but when you try to play any of the songs you get an error message stating that the original file cannot be found.

If so, the error is because iTunes can no longer find the file for that song either because it has been moved, renamed or deleted or the path to it has changed.

Have you recently made any changes to your music, such as deleting files to save space, or adding them from an external drive? Once we know what has happened, we can hopefully fix it.

The find location option will work, if the file is still on your laptop and you find it. iTunes can only find files by itself under limited conditions.

Thanks for your reply. You understand the problem well.

Recently, I have not made any changes to my iTunes music files.

if there is some way to find the location of the missing file, other than with the error message that I got, please tell me.

Another piece of the puzzle is that on my iPad, I can play music from my iTunes library without a problem, so it is definitely my computer that is the problem.

plus , today I downloaded the latest version of iTunes, but that did not change the situation
