I cannot see word count in documents using shortcut listed

I have tried using the shortcut ( Command+W) and also mouse click to turn on word count without success.

I expect to see the information near the cursor in the document. Am I looking in the wrong place?

iMac 24″, macOS 14.2

What application? We are not clairvoyant, and the keyboard shortcuts will vary across different applications.
