Can I still use my verification code if I set up security keys

While setting up verification keys in Mac OS X Settings a message is being presented: 'A physical security key replaces verification codes ....' . Does that mean that verification codes can not be used for 2 Factor Authentication as an alternative to security keys?

2 factor verification on a 2008 Apple IMac, running 10.9.5 - can't add verification code I had notes from Apple Support some time ago, can't remember how to add the six digit verification code to my password, and get my old 2008 Apple IMac to accept it. Saw you enter password and then the six digit verification code, but can't seem to find out where and get it to accept it -

trying to login on an older iMac and it will not pop up the six-number code box for the two factor verification I try to login to itunes or icloud on my iMac and it will not show the two factor authentication box to enter the code. It tells me I need the verification code...but no place to enter it! :(

Quick update on my own question above. I have set up the security keys and my verification codes method is not available any longer. When I am prompted for 2nd authentication factor I can only use the security keys method.
