PDF Files suddenly became locked

I have upgraded my Mac and old PDF files that I could freely edit in the past have now become locked.

The files are located on a shared Google Drive and co-workers using older Macs can still open and edit (copy and paste) from them.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is there something different in a security setting on new model Macs?

It is a bug with the macOS Preview app according to @etresoft who is a respected forum contributor and independent software developer. See this post & thread here:

There was a more recent thread where @etresoft explained things a bit more, but I'm unable to locate it at the moment. Actually found one of those more recent threads here (not the one I was hoping for though):
