Every time I download a file, I get this error message unless I change the file name.
I have checked the permissions and I am authorised to read & write - it seems only to apply when I download files with the same name as have been used previously.
How can I bypass this ie open without renaming?

You cannot bypass the renaming of files. The Mac will not allow you to have two files with identical names in the same folder. You must rename one of them or the OS will do it for you the next time you try to download another file of the same name. For example, you might see a name such as 'downloadfile2.doc'.
If you must have two identically named files, then one will have to be moved to a different folder than the second.
