Here is a clear answer:

Browsers never find links. The search engine that YOU have chosen to use in a browser finds links.

In Safari: Click on Safari in the top bar, then Settings, then Search and choose your preferred search engine from the dropdown

In Firefox: Click on Firefox in the top bar, then Settings, then Search, then Default search engine and choose your preferred search engine from the dropdown.

HINT: DuckDuckGo is the only search engine that does not track and sell your search history.

Just google "1=-1" and you get different results in Safari and FF (FireFox)
Can you explain that ??
As noted, it can depend on the search engine you're using. And, in the case of Google, it can depend on whether or not you're logged in. If you're logged into Google, the results are "tailored" based on previous searches.

As google collects all the Personal Data for resale

If only it worked as well as Google.

That’s the tradeoff. Google works better BECAUSE it tracks everyone’s searches, so it can match your searches to what other people were looking for. But it also uses that tracking information to target ads to you, and to sell to their advertisers. So it’s sort of like getting the benefit of a pact with the Devil, with your soul (or online life story) as the price.

Over the past 3 weeks I have accumulated 101 messages in my gmail spam folder.

I also get about a dozen “promotions" emails a day (i.e. ads) on my gmail account, that cannot be selected and deleted; they must be deleted individually, and the trash icon on those emails moves around, so sometimes when I click the trash icon in the message list the message opens anyway.

I resent that implication. I have never used my gmail account for anything other than personal emails. I never use it for e-commmerce activities, never use it to register on websites. I use my iCloud account or login with Apple for any sites I visit. So I must conclude that either Google is sharing it or spammers just make cycle through possible gmail addresses.

At a guess, I suspect your previous search history in the respective browsers might have an influence, but I've no idea why you're asking that here. The search results are the business of Google, not of either of the browsers. That's where you should pose your query.
