MacBook Air M1 screen cracking incident

This is not looking for a solution, but rather documenting another case of a cracked display for seemingly no reason. That is to say, trying to reckon with the fact that it’s not “accidental” damage in the sense that user action or negligence is the cause.

Macbook Air M1 purchased March 2022. Single-person house with no kids or pets, no external attachments, falls, undue pressure or force, dings, etc. and nightly placement of laptop into soft case that includes styrofoam lining.

Regular function through evening of 1/10/24 and reopening evening of 1/11/24 revealed a crack on my display screen (close to top-center edge, where screen meets bottom of trackpad). With no visible food, sand, bits of [any other excusable item], I bring it into Apple who ships it for repair (return service acknowledgment confirms no external damage visible).

I was recommended by two Apple employees in-store if I’d purchased w/ Amex initially that accidental protection via them could cover all or a portion of the cost and that they had commonly seen that.

As of today, 1/25/24, I’ve received a rejection from American Express which seems focused on user error or negligence. Unsure if folks whose warranties have expired or don’t have AppleCare have much choice outside of just paying Apple for repairs since there seems to be no clear answer as to the origin of this problem or acknowledgment of it as a possible fault of the hardware.

Were you by any chance using a camera cover? Most camera covers are too thick and can cause a display to crack when the laptop is closed. In fact if anything gets caught between the display and the palmrest/keyboard, it can possibly crack the display since there is so little clearance. I've even heard of index cards getting caught between them causing the display to crack.

FYI, if there was no signs of accidental damage and if this laptop was still under warranty, then it probably would have been repaired for free under warranty depending on what the cracked looked like (single hairline crack is usually covered under warranty and considered a possible defect...Apple has very precise rules regarding which cracks may be covered under warranty).

It is really hard to say what happened even if there was no external cause for the crack. I have never seen it while supporting my organization's Macs as they always show some sort of accidental damage related to the crack. I do know that is always possible for a screen to crack on its own especially if there was a weakness or defect in the screen. The Apple built-in displays are very thin which may make them more prone to cracking.
