iPhones Battle for Wifi

My husband and I have an IPhone 11 and XR, and recently if his phone is on WiFi, mine can’t connect and vice versa. So if I need the internet, he has to turn his WiFi off. If he needs it, I have to turn mine off. We have checked our router with our ISP and reset our network settings. All other devices (non apple) work fine. (We disconnected them and the problem persists). This is especially inconvenient because we have no data signal and use WiFi calling. Any ideas how to correct this issue? Thank you.

Do your iPhones both have the same name in Settings -> General -> About -> Name? If so, try changing one of them. Some routers might incorrectly assume that both iPhones are the same device if they are the same.


Less likely is that your iPhones are configured to use the same fixed IP address rather than DHCP when connecting to your WiFi. That is not a default configuration. Go to Settings -> WiFi, find your WiFi name and tap the blue circled lowercase i. Go down to Configure IP and make sure it is set to Automatic. Even less likely, if it is set to Automatic, tap that and make sure the Client ID field is blank. You can also try turning off the Private Wi-Fi Address setting on one or both phones if it is on.
