My late 2015 iMac will no longer recognize an SD card I insert. It is running Monterey 12.7.3. This is a brand new development after years of SD card use. Has there been a software change preventing this, or am I just suffering from an aging iMac in which the card reader no longer works?
Any suggestions?

Had the same issue on my 2019 iMac 27". If I had the card inserted before booting up it would read it but not if I inserted after booting up. Then when I updated the OS to the next level it started to work correctly again. This was reported by several users. I did find out that if I used an external SD reader connected to one of the USB ports it worked without issue. I believe there was something in the Monterey version causing the SD card slot reading incorrectly.
Just to close this out. I was able to read the SD card using an external SD reader connected to a USB port. So either the problem was called by the latest version of Monterey, or simply the reader in my aging iMac. The external SD reader did the trick.
Most likely, it is the latter. AFAIK, unlike CDs where you used to be able to get a "cleaner" disc, I don't think they make anything similar for SD card readers.

I've just tried inserting the card before booting, but that doesn't help in this case. Next I will try connecting an external SD reader when I get my hands on one.

I doubt it is the reader in your Mac as I and others have reported this issue earlier on. You may find it start to work again one day.
