Sharing contacts and calendar events

I reset a MacBook and gave it to a friend. Somehow they are receiving any new contact I save in my phone and any new event I add to my calendar. I signed out of the MacBook and did a complete reset down to where one would have to sign in to the AppleID. How can I get my calendar and contacts to stop syncing or meshing on my friend's devices under their AppleID. I am using my AppleID and they are using their own AppleID. How could this have happened? I am currently running 17.2.1. And we are not sharing calendars either. This has been a thing since 2020 and have not been able to rectify the issue.

Not sure if this is what you mean by complete reset, but this will wipe the drive and reset to factory settings and should not give you any problems.

If that is not what was done, then Calendar and Contacts can still have accounts signed into them that are yours. Your friend would need to go to settings for each app:

  • Contacts > Settings > Accounts
  • Calendar > Settings > Accounts

They can then remove the accounts that belong to you.

I was thinking more if you had an Outlook account or even Gmail at Contacts > Settings > Accounts. When you set those ones up as a Mail account, you are also given the option to sync Contacts and Calendars. If you had one of those still set up on the old Mac, when you added a item on your calendar on the new Mac it would sync the contact to your old Mac using that Outlook or Email account.

Since you are showing only your iCloud account at that location, it would not be the issue. I also don't understand how the syncing is occurring since you reset the Mac to Factory Settings, which would erase the drive. The situation I described would only happen if you just signed out of your Apple ID and then a different Apple ID was signed in.

Hopefully we will get some input from other users who may have an idea.

HI Jim,

Thanks for the info. I did a complete factory reset on the MacBook. I am looking on my end just to get a feel and I don't see when I open the contacts app a settings option to go to accounts and same for the calendar. Do you mean go to settings > contacts > accounts ? If so, I tried this too and it just brings me to the iCloud as it says I only have 1 account. I know that the other person would have to do the same and perhaps they may have my account under theirs.
