cmd-x and cmd-v for moving files in finder?

I would like to cut and paste files in finder. It's quite awkward/inefficient having to open source and target locations in finder to drag the files with the mouse to the new location. However, cmd-x and cmx-v does not work, the computer just makes a sound. Is there a tool or a setting that I can install/change to make it work?
