Issue with Illustrator files

Hi.

I am working on an Apple MacBook Pro (Sonoma 14.2.1 (23C71) using Creative Cloud (Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop mainly).

I have a lot of logos (saved as .eps vector files) I have used for years in jobs – they were created in illustrator well before Creative Cloud – some by me but mainly by other people. When I try to open these files I just get ‘Verifying access to ‘New Style logos.eps’ and they won’t open. Also when I try and create a PDF from InDesign with one of these files place, it doesn’t work and neither will they copy from the folder to desktop.

I have worked with these logos for years and on my current MacBook Pro for over a year. I first realised the issue on Friday when I tried to PDF an Indesign document and it just wouldn’t work. By a process of elimination I realised it was a logo from illustrator so I replaced it with a Photoshop version I had. I then noticed I couldn’t open/copy or do anything with these illustrator files. I can work around it for now but I have several jobs which I will need to access which have 100s of illustrator vector files in and I really need to solve the problem!

This could cause me no end of problems so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 14.2

FIrst of all, Apple has removed .e/ps functionality from the operating system in Ventura and Sonoma for security reasons:

  1. Removed conversion methods in Apple's PDFKit framework to change .e/ps files to PDF. That also means the Preview application no longer opens, converts, and views these document types. Neither does the free Skim PDF reader which also depends on Apple's PDFKit.
  2. Removed a Finder capability to view .e/ps document icons as artwork
  3. Removed the macOS utility pstopdf

I happen to have Ghostscript installed which also installs some handy utilities such as ps2ps, eps2eps — either of which can take .eps, .ps, or even .pdf files as input. There are other included utilities as well.

GraphicConverter 12 has a browse tab on its opening panel that allows you to choose a folder and then select it. It then brings up a full-screen light table of that folder content including displayed .e/ps files.
