Monitoring workouts on Apple Watch

I have the Apple Watch 9 and the latest iOS update. How come when I’m monitoring my workouts with my watch, the heart rate is in bold face and the heart emoji is a solid red color and sometimes the heart rate is grey and the heart emoji is only outlined in red?

If the heart rate is shown in grey, the heart rate sensor can not detect your pulse at this moment.

This can happen if the watch is moving on your wrist while exercising.

To get a good reading, try to wear the watch a bit higher by moving it 1-2cm or 1 inch away from your wrist, and make sure that the band is not too lose around your arm.
