Can’t download apps unless i pay past due subscriptions

I am trying to download a new app. I have a past due subscription for a streaming service i only wanted for one time use. It was due a couple days ago but i canceled it. They told me to add a new payment method to verify identity so i removed the old one that i manually add money to when needed and added it back and they are still trying to get me to pay it before i download the app. it’s not just about having a working card on file. you literally have to pay past due balances on unrelated subscription services just to download an app. that’s a huge problem. the balance is not with any apple service so i don’t see how these two things are related. tags say iphone 8 but i have an iphone 12 that’s updated across the board

iPhone 8

Thank you for your response this is extremely helpful. Additionally, the subscription was due 4 days ago and I cancelled it today. but it says it expires at the end of the next month as if i already paid for this month (which i didn’t) so is there no way to avoid paying for the service to download a new unrelated app?

Subscriptions frequently get routed through Apple, so Apple is involved. They will make you pay any balance due before you can make additional purchases.

This support article explains how to cancel a subscription from Apple on an Apple mobile device, Mac, PC, and online ➔ If you want to cancel a subscription from Apple - Apple Support , or this video will only tell you how to do it on an iPhone ➔ https://www.youtube.com/watch/XXx-J-ueCtE

Notes:

• You might need to scroll down to find the Cancel Subscription button.

• If you don’t see Cancel Subscription, then the subscription is already canceled and won't renew. An "Expires" date (instead of "Renews") means the current subscription will just run until then. "Resubscribe" is just in case you change your mind about having it end.

• Deleting an app does not cancel a subscription.

• If you don’t cancel trials more than 24 hours before your renewal date, your subscription might renew.

• If you don't have an Apple device, see the options near the bottom of the support document.

• Many subscriptions are set to renew automatically until you intentionally cancel them.
