turn on optimization for photos to icloud on Mac (Catalina iOS) and what do I do to remove photos to free up space

I have turned on storage optimization to free up space on my Mac with iOS Catalina. Photos were taking up all my space. Now....how do I remove the photos from my Mac so I can free up the space but ensure it is not deleted from iCloud (and other iCloud synced devices...i.e. phone). Sorry basic questions new to Mac laptop.

If you elected to optimize photo storage, there is nothing more to do. Your photos will be replaced with lower-resolution images over time. Keep in mind that you'll need some space available on your Mac for optimization to work. Open photos. Go to photos > settings > iCloud to ensure optimize is selected.

You can also move your photo library to an external drive. Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support

Either way, be sure that you are backing up your data using Time Machine (or similar).
