Unpack JPG Files

Photos taken by others used to come in HEIC format. Now they come in JPG format with low resolution. I used to open the HEIC files with preeview, then export them to JPG and high resolution.

How do I get high resolution from compressed JPG files?

Example file from iPhone 13: 045CFE91-6B8A-4A6A-AFA3-40B82EB78F17_1_105_c.jpeg

The file size is 256kb.

iPhone SE, iOS 15

How are you receiving these photos? Via email or text?

You can't increase the resolution, i.e. uncompress, a 256 KB file. It is what it is. However, resolution is related to pixel dimensions. If the pixel dimensions are the same as the HEIC version the image resolution should be the same. It's explained in the article The Myth of DPI.

You'll have to contact the sender and have them send larger sized JPEGs or HEIC versions.

If you cannot get the sender to send you a high resolution image, the best you can do is to use some software that will enlarge the image without blurring the edges. For example the free online image enlarger (see: Online Image Enlarger) can interpolate pixels and increase the size, while keeping the edges sharp. I have used it successfully, when someone sent me tiny images.

if the images are highly compressed JPEGs you will notice the JPEG artefacts after enlarging the images . There is no help for that - JPEG is using a lossy compression. I used the retouch tool to get rid if the most annoying artefacts.
