Heic format photos

Hello, today I found out that my iPhone saves my photo's in .heic format. That isn't compatible with a lot of programs on my computer. I want to settings - camera - formats and changed it to most compatibel (in stead of high efficiency). But still my photo's are saved als .heic as I want it to pe .jpeg. What did I do wrong and I how can I do the settings that they will save as .jpeg. Thanks!

iPhone 6, iOS 12

When you change the Settings - camera - formats to most compatible, any new photos you take will be saved as JPEG. But the photos you have already taken will remain as HEIC images. You have to convert them manually to JPEGs.

You can convert them manually, when download the images from the iPhone to a computer. This can be enabled in the Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC. See: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support
