Why are my photos heic instead of jpg? can I save heic to jpg?

Hi everyone! I recently ran into a problem with some photos and was hoping someone could help me out. I noticed that the photos I took with my phone were all in the HEIC format, rather than the more common JPG format. This problem has caused me a lot of trouble using my Windows computer, as not all software supports the HEIC format very well. Does anyone know why my photos are automatically saved in the HEIC format? Or is there a way to save heic to JPG format?

The photos taken on modern iPhone will be saved as heic image by default. However, you can save it as jpg by making the camera changes.

  1. On your iPhone, go to the "Settings" app.
  2. Camera Settings: Scroll down and tap on "Camera."
  3. Tap on "Formats" at the top of the Camera settings page.
  4. Select "Most Compatible." This will set your iPhone to save photos in JPEG format (and videos in H.264) instead of HEIC (and HEVC for videos).

By choosing "Most Compatible," your iPhone will save photos in JPEG format, which is more widely compatible with other devices and software. If you already have photos saved in HEIC format and want to save heic to JPG, you can do so by using the Preview app on Mac or TunesBro HEIC Converter on a Windows PC.
