Can I Copy New Data With Older Operating Systems

Can I make direct copies of Photos or Final Cut libraries, managed with Ventura or Sonoma, from one external drive to another, using a Mac with an older operating system like High Sierra or El Capitan? Would the older OS mess with the newer data transfer? I'd rather use an older machine as a backup workhorse if I can.

It depends on the format of the external drives and what version of macOS you are using.

  • If the external drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), yes.
  • If the external drive is formated as APFS you "should" be able to use High Sierra but not El Capitan.

Since you are already on Ventura or Sonoma, IMHO it would be better just to use that machine.
