Suggestions for iCloud
I know this is not a typical question regarding help, but I hope these points get evaluated and iCloud improves (in the way I see improvements).
I upgraded my free iCloud plan to iCloud+ 2TB and I started using the services more extensively. Then all the limitations appeared:
1) iCloud drive cannot upload folders through the web interface.
It seems the rationale is about iCloud Drive being first and foremost a Sync service. But then again, you should be able to send something through the web to let it sync with your devices when you are using another device but you need the files to appear elsewhere. This besides using iCloud Drive as a more complete Cloud Storage service like competitors.
2) iCloud email service lacks too many basic features.
You cannot organize an e-mail in multiple categories everywhere (e.g., "labels", "tags" etc). Mac has Smart Folders, but these won't show in your devices because it is, as far as I can tell, a local (i.e., not cloud) feature specific for the Mac Mail client. Therefore, all my mail would be dependent on client features being available on all the versions in all my devices (that is, depending on the programmer will to support it everywhere). Or use unacceptable workarounds like leaving a fixed Mac on all the time to sort email. And then there is the issue arising if I ever plan to move my email somewhere else.
iCloud mail "Rules" are very basic, are nowhere near the functionality that you can have on Mac Mail client (that is confusing in itself when people expect their Apple devices to behave in a "continuum"). So, the way I see it, iCloud Mail rules should be overhauled beyond the basics we have now. That would be perfect.
3) You can't set storage quotas to your family members.
This problem has been extensively documented and discussed online. I believe I only need to add that this is a family plan and we all know family members not always are diligent enough to not capture and backup hundreds of screenshots of cute dogs doing silly faces. And if I need to punish these family members with more severe measures then it means (in my mind) it is not an appropriate family plan. I guess an oversight or no incentives? Note than I'm not even questioning if this is a way to push for more independent subscriptions, as I refuse to believe Apple would need to resort to such cheap unprofessional tactics.
And these are just the more blatant examples. (1) is a nuisance, (3) is boring as it would take my time to constant check and police my family, but (2) (with other smaller issues) is an absolute deal breaker for me and it is the reason why I cancelled my subscription after a few days of trying it.
Anyway, please don't take this the wrong way. I hope it comes across as a genuine feedback on how Apple iCloud+ can become a more useful cloud service for intermediate to advanced home/SoHo users.
