That's a generic HTTP error (Bad Request). In the context of Gmail, it appears to mean this:

If you are using an older version of Apple Mail, it could be that Google considers that version of Mail to be insecure and won't allow you to connect using your regular Google password. In that case, you might need to configure Mail to sign in using a Google app password.
