My Apple ID is connected to an ex's account and I can't unchain them.

Several years ago, I had a shared phone plan with my ex. After we broke up, I change my user picture on my Mac and iPad and their photo changes on their phone. I try to set my user photo as my initials on a brand new Macbook and it shows their initials. We are no longer linked on any accounts, never had a shared family plan, and don't live in the same state. What can I do to break this connection, ideally without contacting them?

You’re apparently now or were once sharing an Apple ID.

Do you have the password to the Apple ID here?

If the Apple ID is also used for Activation Lock as would be common, then only the person with the password can release the lock, or somebody with the original purchase receipts and a discussion with Apple.

If you have the password, then one of you will have to switch the Apple ID in use.
