Apple Watch S6 Not Tracking Pool Swim Distance Correctly when Using Paddles

I've been using my Apple Watch S6 for a good 18 months tracking pool swim distance and it does a great job counting laps and distances. Starting this year, I swim a portion of my distance using hand paddles for greater resistance. The laps I am swimming with the hand paddles are undercounted typically by 20-30%.

Since the hand paddles do change your stroke (higher resistance, slower stroke, more distance covered per stroke) I tried to be more intentional over time to keep a consistent stroke and have a clear 180 degree turn when changing directing, but the issue persists.

Is this a known issue or is there anything I can do to correct this?
