External USB keyboard on new MacBook Pro M3Max

I have a Macally external keyboard that I have used successfully on my 2018 MacBook Pro using an external (hub dongle (USB-A to USB-C). Just tried using it with my new M3 MacBook - but it is not recognized. Hub is fine - mouse works as well as other items such as HDMI (using hub v the HDMI port so I have only one cable). Is there something unique about Apple Silicon than is causing this incompatibility?

As an update, unplugging and replugging in the hub seems to have taken care of this for the moment. However, I have done this before. Plugging the keyboard into the hub however had no effect. Go figure...
