I reset factory settings on iphone 11 a couple months ago but needs 6 digit passcode at re-start

I had it off for a couple of months. Gave to family member and although it has Hello in different languages, when I scroll up to get it started, it requires a 6 digit passcode at re-start. This phone always just had a 4 digit code. Is there a default code? I tried 000000 but it did not work. Any guidance would be appreciated. Told I have to wait 3 hours to try again.

It sounds like the family member or someone else messed around with the settings on the phone, but they will probably deny it if you ask them.

Does the phone have an "Unavailable" message on the screen? If yes, someone messed around with the phone's settings. Follow these instructions:

If this looks a bit too intimidating for you, make an appointment at the Apple Store and they can help get things going again.

No, there is no default passcode. Are you sure it's not asking you to create a passcode? That's part of the set up. And, by default, it will ask you to create a six-digit passcode.

No, it is not asking me to create a passcode. It says it needs the passcode to restart. And for some reason it is 6 digits - not the usual 4. And on the bottom of the screen there is no choice to re-set. It only has a blue area on the bottom middle of the screen to tap for emergency.

You are right, that is possible. He can't remember if he set up a passcode- he said he may have- but doesn't seem to remember. He tried a couple of possibilities before I tried the 000000. He purchased it from me- as I recently purchased the new phone- so I feel bad and want to try and fix this if possible. At first the phone said it would take an hour before trying again, and now it is 3 hours. Going to try again in the morning. Thank you for your help.

I tried to restore the factory settings (plugged into macbook pro while holding power button. But it said it could not restore it because the firmware is corrupt. Do you know what might have caused that? Is there anything that can be done?

And yes, it does currently say:

Iphone Unavailable

Try again in 2 hours, 3 minutes

I'll try the link instructions in the AM and if that doesn't work, will go to the store when I can.
