Making Bootable USB Installer (Monterey) - USB can't be erased

Hello,

I'm trying to make a bootable USB installer for Monterey using these interactions Create a bootable installer - Apple Support

The USB can't be erased though. Does anyone know what's causing the error?

Annas-Air:~ xxxxxx$ sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/ADATA UFD

Password:

/Volumes/ADATA is not a valid volume mount point.

Annas-Air:~ xxxxxx$ sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/ADATA_UFD

/Volumes/ADATA_UFD is not a valid volume mount point.

Annas-Air:~ xxxxxx$ sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/ADATA

Ready to start.

To continue we need to erase the volume at /Volumes/ADATA.

If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: Y

Erasing disk: 0%... 10%...

Error erasing disk error number (-69888, 0)

An error occurred erasing the disk.

I also tried erasing the USB in Disk Utility, but that won't work there either..

Also when I plug the USB in first, Disk Utility won't list my disks and USB. If I open Disk Utility first though, then plug in the USB, it will list my disks and USB.

Thanks very much.

Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

The important element of this operation in Disk Utilities is View >> View All Devices

Then, choose the Upper most Drive by the Manufactures Name

Refer to image below as example

For Best results to make a Bootable Installer on an External Drive

Format as HFS + ( Journaled ) with the GUID Partition Mapping

You seem to have put a space in the name of the disk. You will have to escape that space on the command line, like so:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/ADATA\ UFD

Hello both,

I managed to make a bootable version of Monterey on another USB and that’s worked well.

The other ADATA USB I was trying with before, crashed Windows when I tried to delete files from it. Also the “right click, format” option for it wasn’t visible, so maybe it is faulty. Although I don’t know much about Windows…

Thanks very much for your help.

Thank you very much for the replies.

etresoft, I changed the USB drive name in the command line like you said, but there is the same problem unfortunately.

PRP_53, I tried to choose the settings you said in Disk Utility, but they are not available. I'll attach pictures.

When I tried using Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Disk Utility crashed.

Also it's not possible to eject the USB. Could the USB be faulty? I'll wait until I can get another to try with.
