I have an existing app that I downloaded and is available on my Apple TV. I would like this app to show up under the sidebar "channel and apps" on the main screen. How do I add this app. Using Apple TV gen 1

Apps must support that, else it won’t connect. These apps have registered with Apple to support this: Availability of supported apps in the Apple TV app - Apple Support
It is a new listing in the sidebar, but not really much of a new feature. The same apps were connectable before, for Up Next, Watch Now (now: Home), and Search.

I suppose you meant Apple TV 4K (1st generation) [A1842]. There were four generations before that, and only one of them can run tvOS 17.2.
