New ports on MacBook m2

I want to know if a usb c adapter can go into a usb 4 port on a m2 MacBook Air. My last MacBook was a 2018 air and it has similar ports on it but they are called usb c not usb 4. But they look the same.

FWIW ... The port naming convention leaves a lot of us a bit confused. Maybe frustrated would be more accurate.

To help clarify this, when it comes to USB, there are two basic definitions that cover all of them.

They are:

  • Port type (aka, port shape): These are defined as: USB-A, USB-B, & USB-C. For the first two types, there are a number of variants. Most newer devices now are equipped with USB-C type ports.
  • Port capability (aka, data transfer speed, power handling capacity): USB 1.x, USB 2.x, USB 3.x, & USB 4.x. These are USB "standards" that define what the port is able to handle.

Where there is a bit more confusion is which port types use which port capability. In the recent past, USB 1.x thru USB 3.x used USB-A or USB-B ports. However, USB 3.x, & now USB 4.x use USB-C port.

Hopefully that helped.
