Apple Music app and old iPod (5th Gen) issue, can't edit or play songs on Macbook Air

I have 2023 Macbook Air M2 running Sonoma 14.2.1. Also I have the 5th Gen iPod (not Touch) that I use to play music in my car. I was adding/editing music with iTunes on my old iMac for years but now with iTunes gone I can't do anything anymore with the iPod on Music app. It shows all the songs but that's it. I can't play them through the computer, can't edit them. Is this the way Apple designed it to be ? Any suggestions for an alternative ? Finder is no help whatsoever (only sees some of the songs on the iPod).

MacBook Air 11″, macOS 11.5

Thanks, Jim.

No, I don't have a subscription.

And the problem with using Finder is that the iPod was always set to 'manually manage music' so to sync I would have to wipe it clean first. It shows the iPod twice, I'm guessing once as a device and second as an external drive (as 'disk use' is enabled). But for some reason only 'sees' the music that has been added using the new computer but not the rest.

I guess I need to keep my old desktop just to be able to edit an old iPod. Unless there is other software that does the same thing.
