Why can't I set MY OWN music in Photos Memories (or just turn it off)?

Older versions of iOS allowed users to choose their own music for Memories. Now, I get pre-selected music from Apple Music and cannot even choose my own music from my own library.

So now my choices are to either put up with music that I don't like or consider appropriate or desirable when I'm watching Memories or I have to spend my time going through selections that somebody else thought would be "desirable" for me, looking for something that I can put up with. All this when I have thousands of tunes, playlists and soundtracks THAT I LIKE and would have added to MY OWN Memories, if Apple weren't so determined to shove Apple Music down my throat.

I don't even get the privilege of turning off music entirely; I am forced into the distasteful dilemma above if I want to view Memories at all.

This approach is so Microsoft: "We know what is good for you (and is also, incidentally, something we own, control and can monetize) and that's what you can choose. And, incidentally, we know what music goes best with your memories."

The company that once stood for "Think Different" is now, in this respect, the company of "you can do anything you want to do ... as long as it's what we want you to do".

So much for Memories ... I just won't view them, since Apple has seen fit to take what little creative joy and user-control there was out of them.

What problems are you having changing the Music?

Use Memories in Photos on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

  1. Open Photos and tap the For You tab.
  2. Tap a memory to play it.
  3. Tap the Memory mixes button , then tap the Music button .
  4. Select a song from the list, or search for a specific song, then tap Done.

You can also:

  • Change the length of the Memory
  • Add or Remove photos from a Memory
  • Change the Title of the Memory
  • Create your own Memory
  • Share the Memory

Thanks, Mac Jim ID, for the reply; I appreciate it. The problem is that when I tap the Memory mixes button and then tap the Music button, the ONLY songs on the list are those curated from Apple Music; none of them are mine and there is no access to my music library. If I click the "Search" or "See All" buttons, the same holds true. So, as I said, I'm stuck either wading through music I don't know trying to find something that I think compliments the Memory or simply putting up with what someone else (no matter how well-intentioned) thinks I ought to hear with my Memories.

Thanks, Old Toad. You are right; it is what it is. I will post feedback requesting the ability to use my own musical choices with my Memories, though I am less than optimistic about the outcome.

You are, of course, correct; I could export and edit the Memory in GB but that takes the intended convenience of quickly adding music to a Memory on-the-fly and converts it into a separate creative project; I might as well simply create my own slide show with its attendant audio track.

Thanks again and best wishes.

That's nice, Mac Jim ID, and I think that's great for you. Really.

But I don't want to have to subscribe to yet another service in order to soundtrack my own Memories when I have a library of 14,000+ songs (at last count), 100's of film soundtracks and over 100 playlists which were, as often as not, being listened to when the photos (and thus the memories they represent) were created and so are often more appropriate than music that someone else thought would go with memories that they themselves never had. Nor can I use the vast collection of film soundtrack music, ambient and orchestral music that I have spent decades collecting.

I appreciate what you're saying; I guess I'm just Thinking Differently ...
