Migration issues

I have a MacBook Pro 2020 vintage with a quad core i5 processor that I am trying to migrate to a MacBook Pro with an M2Max processor and I can't get the newer machine to connect to the old machine. Both are on the same wifi network and I have connected them together with a USB C cable. I had no problem when I migrated from the M2max to my new M3max MacBook Pro.

Any suggestions?

Mac Pro, macOS 12.6

USB is a Strictly LOCAL peripheral interface, and is simply NOT SUITABLE for Network connections.

An Ethernet connection world work. If both Mac are running 10.12 Sierra or later, they can form an ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection if they are very close to each other.

A Thunderbolt cable might work (if so equipped) as it IS considered suitable for computer-to-computer connections.
