Two Factor ID and trusted device(s)

Hi all - from what I have been reading here, if you have multiple trusted devices, a verification code should be sent to all of them when needed. But that is not how it worked; we went to our camp and wanted to watch Apple TV. I had my iPhone with me but not my MacBook computer. We tried to login but no code was received by the phone. When we got home , I saw that code had been sent to my MacBook computer. Why did my iPhone not receive a code? Does it come via text? Nothing on the phone indicated a code or any message had come in. How do I get the codes to come to my phone, or at least both devices?

I understand how to remove a trusted device - but I’d really prefer not to. My phone makes more sense as I always have my phone with me. Many thanks.

The code should automatically come to all of your trusted devices but it has happened on quite a few occasions that at least one of my devices doesn't get the code. And it seems random -- i.e., not always the same device.

The code is not normally sent via text message (see exception to that below}; when the code is received it appears on the screens of your trusted devices, not in Messages.

What might have helped, if you didn't try it, is to start over and try again. I have had occasions where the code wasn't received by the device that I needed it be sent to but was when I tried again.

Another option would have been, after the failure to receive the code, to ask that the code be sent to a trusted phone number. See the following from Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

If you're trying to sign in and don't have a trusted device with you that can display verification codes, you can tap Didn't Get a Code on the sign-in screen and choose to send a code to one of your trusted phone numbers. This text message might include an additional domain validation line that includes the @ symbol, the website name, and your code (for example, @icloud.com #123456 %apple.com). Or you can get a code directly from Settings on a trusted device.
