I've been using a personal email that is managed by a 3rd party and handled by Google. I change my password and I can receive mail on my iPhone and through gmail but not through Mail on my Mac???

When I try to change my password in Mail, I receive this message:

Changing an email account password using the Mail app's Preferences won't suffice. You have to do that through your email account provider's account settings. Usually that's accomplished through their webmail interface.

Then, remove the affected email account(s), and add them again. That procedure is addressed in If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac - Apple Support under Remove your email account, then add it back.

Thanks, John. This is waaay more complicated than I can handle but I'll try to explain.

  1. my domain was purchased and set up in Bluehost and originally I set up my email there as well.
  2. I subsequently set up a website using WIX, using the vanfleisher.com domain and since I was sending email marketing, I moved my email management to WIX.
  3. WIX then suggested or required me to use Gmail in some way. I had already set up my email in Mac Mail, so I could access/send my mail from Mac Mail or Gmail. Also my iPhone.
  4. Life was good
  5. I then changed my password in WIX and I think, Gmail (although it might have happened through WIX. I also changed it on my iPhone, so both it and the Gmail site can be used.
  6. I tried changing it on my Mac and that was when I got the Error 400 numbers.
  7. I deleted the email from my Mac but when I tried to add it, I received the Sign in to Mac message after adding my pass word and when I click continue, I receive the Error 400.
  8. If you can help me fix this you should be elevated to Level 20 or more! Thanks

Thanks, you explained it perfectly.

To my knowledge, when adding a Google Mail account to the Mac's Mail app you need to be using Safari as your default browser for that particular Google authentication to work.

Caveat: I do not permit the use of Google products on our Macs, so I cannot personally verify it as either the cause or a solution, but refer to Can't add google account to Monterey - Apple Community for at least one confirmation of that suspicion.

To change your default browser, read Change the default web browser or email app on your Mac - Apple Support.
