Mail on Mac suddenly started asking for password and then will not accept it

It is the correct password because I can access the email acct on safari as well as my iPhone. It is a hotmail email. And this site will not allow me to change devices. I am having trouble on my 2014 Mac mini; works fine on Safari (same Mac) and fine on my iPhone XR.

iPhone 5c, iOS 9

For whatever reason, your Mac's email app has started sending a corrupted password to the email server. It isn't accepted and the message is generated. Do the following.

  1. Go into the email app and open its Preferences to carefully check the listed ID and password information. Correct it if necessary.
  2. If no errors are found, then delete and create a new user account in the email app, carefully entering your password, etc. This usually solves these problems.

Be sure to save any messages you have in a local folder prior to deleting the message tonsure that they are not lost.
